Model Railroading
Society

The Arizona Model Railroading Society & The Arizona Garden Railway Society, collectively known as AMRS, are located at the Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park in northwest Phoenix. The purpose of the Society shall be to promote the hobby of model railroading as a pleasant, educational, leisure-time activity, encourage friendship among modelers of all ages and to educate the membership and the public about railroads in general and model railroading in particular.

The 44 acre park includes a large garden railroad, a club house, a covered patio for special events & swap meets, space for future buildings and displays and the Maricopa Live Steamers. The society encourages the building and operation of model railroad layouts in any scale or gauge for its members and exhibition throughout the state of Arizona. AMRS is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, Officers and Superintendents.

Financed and built by its members, the 3000 square foot AMRS club house started construction in the summer of 2002 and opened in the fall of 2004. With the exception of pouring and laying the floor slab and engineering and building the roof trusses, club members built the rest of the building. It is a testament to the society’s efforts to act on its goals and objectives. The clubhouse houses the N scale layout, the HO scale layout, meeting room, library, workshop facilities, kitchen area and restrooms. The library contains many railroad reference books, modeling magazines, and railroad videos. Pictures of club members erecting the club house can be found under the Photo Gallery tab in the menu bar

Each year AMRS puts on several special events. These include, but not limited to, a railroad swap meet on the 3rd Saturday in March and October, Veteran's Appreciaton day in November, Starlight Christmas in December for kids, young and old alike, complete with goodies and Santa Claus. In October 2009, AMRS along with Maricopa Live Steamers hosted a regional Boy Scout Camporee. As part of this event, AMRS particated in the Boy Scout Railroad Merit Badge program. Needless to say even some of the AMRS members learned a thing or two about railroading. For the last few years, AMRS has hosted the Arizonans For Children an organization for foster children. The kids have a picnic at the park, watch trains run, and get free rides on the Maricopa Live Steamers trains.
